  Second shooting in a Toledo bar within a week

  WEST TOLEDO, Ohio - Like a page out of the wild west, a man was shot over a poker game in a West Toledo bar.
   

  Toledo Police tells Fox Toledo News Billie Joe Hicks, 33, was arrested on Felonious Assault charges for shooting Thomas Phillips at the Malibu Bar at 2045 West Alexis Road, just before midnight, October 14, 2009.
   

  According to the report, an argument started over a poker game in the Malibu Bar, when Hicks pulled a gun and shot at Philips.
   

  Phillips, who works at the bar, was struck in the right forearm by a ricocheting bullet.
   

  The injury was not life threatening.

  Not good press for poker at all. I'd feel much safer playing online when idiots like this are going around.
  
  That's what I don't get about the US - you can keep a gun but you can't play poker online. Wierd shit!!

  With it being a ricocheted bullet the shot obviously wasn't directed at the person that works at the bar that was hit ... all be it maybe the guy was that bad of a shot at close range but I doubt it
  
  I do agree with Ian it is crazy the lenient laws that the US carries in gun control ... and the fact that very few politicians are willing to move on on-line poker regulation is ridiculouos
  
  The press is bad but at the same token in the broad view of the game of poker many people will turn the other cheek as being a publicized incident this will not make national news granted many people in Ohio may know about it but here in Texas and I know Vegas no one knows about this incident unless they read this specific article

  Yea, nevada, alaska, texas, kansas, nebraska, oklahoma, the dakotas, MIDDLE pennsylvania, tennessee, kentucky, (getting an idea of these places) would not care bout this article...
  
  california, new england, seattle, philadelphia, dc, miami, (getting a grasp here) would care....
  
  This should be more of a gun control issue than playing cards. But no, they would look at the cause rather than the result.

  This is a good example of how the media can influence people's thinking... Look at the headline... "Man Shot" ... "Poker Game" .... "Bar" .... Toledo...
  How about: "Police are investigating the accidental shooting of a tavern employee, during a card came in Toledo."
  Here is what I thought of when I read the headline... Someone was probably drunk or high and got mad when he/she lost money he/she couldn't afford.... Yes there is probably more to the story than that.... maybe he did get cheated... my point is I didn't read that as bad press for poker, or bars, or Toledo or gun control..... If you want to read "Bad Press" in there, then you probably will... *Note, no reflection on Ian's statement, I am referring to people in general and bias in the press.

  Naturally, this happens a month before Ohio votes on a state prop to allow for 4 casinos to be built in Ohio (one being in Toledo. I love driving through Toledo to Detroit or farther to play at a casino.

  I don't know about "never", but the opposition does run a fine smear campaign.  They killed the one Berman casino prop last year very convincingly.
