Omaha Hi-Lo Strategy Blogs Coming

Just a headsup to everyone that I'm going to be doing a multi-part series of poker blogs showcasing Limit Omaha HI/Lo Strategy.

Off the top of my head topics will include:

- Basic Starting Hand Strategy
- Playing High Only Hands
- Common Mistakes
- Table Selection
- Short-Handed/Aggressive Games Approach

If anyone has specific areas of strategy they'd like me to try and touch on, please post here.

Also, this is for cash games only, not for tournaments

I would love for you to distinguish between preflop hand selection in fixed limit and hand selection in pot limit, and how the betting rules affect each of them specifically. I'm starting to think that O8 could become the new cash cow for many players as NLHE becomes tougher and tougher to beat at higher levels, so I look forward to these blogs.

I don't play the PL games and wouldn't feel comfortable providing strategy on it unfortunately. But I will provide advice preflop and postflop with a variety of hand types in limit games.

PLO is the game to play now... its the next thing. Ive been playing it exclusively for the last few months and reaping the rewards. Ive actually put a couple videos together about PLO HU SnG's and rush poker. Its a helluva game.

O8 is usually only played in mixed games now or by retirees at casinos hehehe. Just play A2sxx and you probably wont lose at the game.

But didnt mean to rain on AJs parade.

PLO, from my understanding, has much higher variance than NL hold em. From what I've seen of the game, it's very coin-flippy (i.e. set vs. straight/flush type confrontations). It is very popular in Europe, but doesn't get spread as much live here in the States (at least atm)

Lol, it's not nearly that simple. And you can find this game spread at casinos or online without being in part of a mixed-rotation (although there's nothing wrong with mixed-rotation games, they can be very profitable if you take the time to learn multiple games)

Actually Bill this will be a series of blogs that cover a number of different hand types and situations in this game. Kinda spread it out so we don't hit you with too much at once.

Michael, unfortunately my knowledge on tournament strategy is limited to NL Hold Em. Cash games are my focus for things like Omaha hi/lo, Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, Badugi, 2-7 Triple Draw, etc.

So unfortunately I'm not the right person to provide tourney advice outside of hold em

I gotcha -- I'm sure it will still help when in a mixed tourney though -- I look forward to it. I have no clue how even math is applied to Ohama games. Being merely a NLHE player who has to pretend to play the other games during that round LOL I scrap by, but barely LOL I even won a HORSE tourney once -- no fricken clue how LOL I must have found the best fish in the poker sea

I'm not too huge on the mathematics of the game either. My focus will be more on hand selection and playing specific situations pre and post-flop.

I know I have some math stuff on the game somewhere, I'll try to locate it and include it where relevant.

Learning variations of all poker is a good idea -- True, PLO is more common -- but you never know -- so the lessons are a good thing

It depends where you play (live vs online and the locations). PL games, in my experience, are rarely spread in live settings except for perhaps higher stakes tables.

So I think most people are likely to encounter limit games and the hi/lo variants rather than omaha hi at a casino.

Here in Michigan PLO is more common, probably because it's easier to deal than hi-low games. We don't have many good dealers here. but it's great to learn about it more -- the 8-game has replaced most HORSE events -- even if they still do them
