$.05/$.10 tables - What should be my bankroll?

If I wanted to play the $.05 / $.10 tables, how much should should I have in my account? I don't want to say how much I have in there now, so that's why I'm being general in my question.

Depends on how comfortable you are with risk? I tend to be between Moderate and Conservative, so about $250 would be a good BR for me at $10NL.

Conservative: 30 buyins ($300 bankroll)
Moderate: 20 buyins ($100 bankroll)
Aggressive: 10 buyins ($100 bankroll)

I've been a winner at cash games for several years, and I can say that 10 buy ins will lead you to busto town.

20 buy ins is alright if you can break even and clear bonus and rakeback.

30-40 buy ins is a good level if you're not able or wanting to reload your account.

Like cprpoker said, depends if you're willing to reload or if you're needing the money.

I don't need the money and getting used to losing my dough at tables..HA. Actually, I do alright. I either live with a little extra or break even from losing the day before.

I just wanted to try my hand a little higher stakes. I hope that's not corny : P

Your bankroll isn't what you have in your player account at this very instant. It's the amount of money that you allot to poker. It can be spread across different poker sites and some in your checking/savings account. If you have absolutely no issue with dropping say $100 and try .05/.10 then go for it.

Oh ok Cpr. I only have cash on one site and that's Bodog. I might wait until next week when I can add more money before hitting the 5c/10c table.

Honestly, Cpr and Bank gave good advice -- I'd go with the conservative approuch if you are moving up in stakes -- and if it gets ugly, move back down for a bit. Poker is fun, but bankroll management is the key to keeping it fun for you and not a stressful thing when losing money that could be paying for food, rent, mortgages. . .etc.

The money I put into poker is definitely not my rent, food or anything else money. When I put money online that's where it stays, ONLINE. One thing I've become a pro at with being unemployed for 17 months is how to manage money, but now that I'm working, I can take a bit of my paycheck and put it into poker. Bills always come first before Poker...

Wait until you try live, it's such a different feeling -- but a whole new fun experience once the nerves wear off. :) but once again, be smart with the bank roll

Looks like good advice. Since I recall that hand you posted where you had two pair (TJ?) on a TJQK board and were willing to stack off, I would highly recommend you continue to make use of the forums here.

Post hands you've played and ask for advice on specific situations. In time we'll turn you into a great player since you've shown a willingness to ask questions and learn. And one day we'll see you winning a big tournament and we can proudly say we saw your rise to the top ;)

I will be posting so many question because I feel myself getting better and better each day. I am playing the top 15 hands right now, but sometimes I veer off the road to test other hands. I only veer with small bets..sometimes I win and sometimes I don't.

I'll be hitting the tables next months, cash game to see how it is and how I do. I am very excited and actually not nervous anymore since I got great advice here about live tables and how to do the chips and such.

I did hit the 5c/10c and didn't play a single hand because they were raising pre-flop and I didn't have the hands I could take a chance on. I left after about three hands and went back to the 2c/5c table. HA! When I build my bankroll up, hopefully this Friday, then I'll go back to the 5c/10c and play some hands.

I think I'm going to start writing down my questions and figuring out a way to post them all at once. The better I get the more questions I have.

Anthony, yes my willingness to learn is there for I would like to hit the big leagues some day. Although a nice dream to have poker be my income, its not my reality. My reality is to have a day job, do my blogging and play poker on the side in hopes of making side money with it. I try to keep everything in prospective. I have dreams and I have realities. The dream: win money at poker. The reality: I need a day job to do that. HA!

There is a good sit and learn at Full Tilt Academy on Bankroll management, you don't have to play at FT to use the Academy.

Basically they suggest for cash games, no more than 5% of your bankroll. So if you're playing .05/.10 amd you figure a buy in is 100 BBs, then you have (.10*100)*20=$200 minimum, but don't forget to keep a little extra in there for the occasional sng or tournament.

I'm part of FT and looked at the academy. Thank you for reminding me to go back there. Now that I know what I'm doing, I'll be able to understand those lessons a bit better.

I seriously want to get better at this game.

Thoughts on Harrington's books?

Harringtons books on NL tournaments are a great way to build a solid foundation in the game to grow upon.

I haven't read his books on cash games so can't comment on that. Nor do I consider myself a NL cash game player (I can get by, but it's not my speciality)

I seem to like cash games, well because I can walk away with a little cash. I enjoy Tournaments because the competition is there and I love to see people leave.

I think I'll get the tournament book because I seem to play those more and more these days and I feel my ring game is getting there.

Read Phil Gordon's little green book. Excellent book for the beginner.

The 1st 3 Harrington books are excellent however, I'd read Phil Gordon's first :)

I agree with Kash -- the little green book (and blue book) sets a good foundation -- then move onto Harrington -- for NLHE that is. :)

it's actually a pretty enjoyable read -- and don't skip over the parts you think you know, it always helps to reinforce your previous knowledge. :)

+1 for Harrington's tourny books, but I really do not like too much his cg books.

And you need a minimum of 40 buyins for NL100, if you are new to that limit. If you lose 10 buyins move down a limit. I admit that this is a bit conservative bankroll management, but it is better to be a bit cautios and to start carefully..

You may even consider starting out at limit poker. Bit easier to learn the fundamentals of Hold Em when you can't get stacked in one hand.

But of course transitioning from limit to nl requires adjustments to consider.

Limit Hold em is a dying game -- stick with NL but maybe more sit-and goes. they can be cheap, can't get you into too much trouble. or small buy-in tourneys as well. if that's a game you enjoy. just take it slow

I honestly think that the limit games are a tougher sort then the no limit games. It's not very often you can convince an amateur poker player that gets all of his strategy from tv poker to play a limit game with you. These types of (ATMs) players just don't play limit poker. You find them all in NL Hold'em. You don't see AS MANY stupid stupid players in limit as you do in NL. Don't get me wrong, not every limit player is solid. Just more of a percentage when compared to the same stakes of NL.

I think learning limit poker is a waste nowadays unless you are trying to learn the games of HORSE. All the money to be made is at PLO8 and NLHE. And besides the fact that limit games are a little tougher, some strategies just don't work in limit that will work in NL. It's almost never profitable to play a small pair against 1 or 2 players in limit. You just can't get enough bets in from two players to make the hand profitable when you hit it. But in NL you can get enough in on 1 bet to make your money when your trips do come through.

I think you should stick with the game that you are comfortable and just make sure you have 40 buyins back. Definitely read the sklansky books. Another series I'd reccomend is the killer poker series by John Vorhaus. Great advice, and the guy has a great sense of humor that makes the book entertaining at the same time as informative. He even has a book about online poker, and that book will make you understand all of the copious amounts of information that are available in an online poker room that you don't even notice right now.
